A mosquito-borne viral disease occurring in tropical and subtropical areas. Dengue fever is commonly known as break-bone fever is a flu-like illness caused by the Dengue virus. It is caused when an Aedes mosquito carrying the virus bites a healthy person.
It is a mosquito-borne viral disease that has rapidly spread in all regions of the world in recent years. Dengue virus is spread by female mosquitoes mainly of the species Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, Aedes albopictus. These mosquitoes are also vectors of chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika viruses. Dengue is widespread throughout the tropical area, with local variations in risk influenced by rainfall, temperature, relative humidity, and unplanned rapid urbanization.
Dengue causes a wide spectrum of diseases. This can range from subclinical disease to severe flu-like symptoms in those infected.
Symptoms include high fever, rash and muscle, and joint pain, headache, etc. In severe cases, there is serious bleeding and shock, or even death.
Rarely some patients develop severe dengue, which can be any number of complications associated with severe bleeding, organ impairment, and/or plasma leakage.
Causes of Dengue:
Dengue is caused due to four viruses, namely – DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. The virus enters inside a mosquito when it bites an already infected person. And the diseases are spread when it bites a healthy person, and the virus spreads through the person’s bloodstream.
Severe Dengue fever, also known as Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever, increases if you’re infected a second, third, or fourth time.
Symptoms of Dengue:
Usually, symptoms of Dengue manifest like an uncomplicated fever and not easily identifiable in teens and children. Dengue causes a fever of 104 F degrees along with at least two or more symptoms like headache or muscle pain. Dengue is a flu-like illness that affects infants, young children, and adults, but seldom causes death. Symptoms usually last for 3–7 days, after an incubation period of 4–10 days after the bite from an infected mosquito [25]. The World Health Organization classifies dengue into 2 major categories: dengue (with/without warning signs) and severe dengue.

At this time, fever starts dropping (below 38°C/100°F) in the patient, that warning signs associated with severe dengue can manifest. Severe dengue is a potentially fatal complication, due to plasma leaking, respiratory distress, fluid accumulation, severe bleeding, or organ impairment.
Warning signs that doctors should look for include:
- severe abdominal pain
- persistent vomiting
- rapid breathing
- bleeding gums
- fatigue
- restlessness
- blood in vomit.
There are three types of fever a patient is prone to, namely – Mild Dengue Fever, Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever, and Dengue Shock Syndrome.
- Mild Dengue Fever – Symptoms start appearing after a week from the bite and include severe or fatal complications.
- Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever – Symptoms are mild but can gradually aggravate within a few days.
